Overview Hematology is the study of blood, the complex body fluid comprised of plasma and blood cells that supply most of the basic energy, nourishment, cleaning and defense mechanisms needed to sustain life, and of the bone marrow, where blood cells are made. Patients are seen for a number of diagnoses related to changes in the blood, and for the underlying conditions that cause those changes. The most common means of testing are lab work and bone marrow biopsy. Examples of Conditions - Anemia (low red blood cell count)
- Elevated or decreased white blood cells
- Elevated or decreased platelets
- Hemochromatosis
- Myelodysplastic Syndrome
- Blood malignancy - Leukemia
