Understanding Medicare

A Preventive Medicine Service or Routine Physical is billed when a patient, who has no current signs, symptoms or complaints that require treatment, presents for a general age and gender appropriate routine physical examination. Medicare pays for very few services that they have determined are routine. Medicare generally will not make payment for services that are not related to a medical or surgical condition, or used to treat an illness or injury. As such, they will not provide payments for this type of screening examination. As the primary care provider who is available and responsible for the patient's health, our providers feel very strongly about, and highly recommend this yearly complete review and assessment. This exam is important for prevention, for uncovering problems not yet apparent, and for establishing a running baseline to allow for comparison in the future.
